ROUND and ABOUT Go through the gate near the foot of the drive, and you will find a path that leads you eventually up onto the Downs. Our immediate neighbour is Wolstonbury Hill, whose summit you may reach within about forty minutes walk from the house. There are plenty of other walks that will take you, for instance, to Ditchling Beacon in the East, or, if you are really energetic, to Chanctonbury in the West. By the field paths, Hurstpierpoint village is about twenty-five minutes away. If you are a golfer, there are three clubs nearby: Pyecombe, West Hove and Singing Hills. |

The two villages between them have a couple of supermarkets and a wide variety of shops (including, in Hurstpierpoint, a very good bookshop). There are doctors and dentists in both, although most residents use one or other of the doctors at the Hurstpierpoint Health Centre. You also have your choice of dentists. Brighton, with its theatre, festival, marina, race-course and night-life, is nine miles away. During the day, you can leave your car at Withdean, on the way in, and then take the Park-and-Ride bus right into the centre. If you prefer a less crowded environment, Haywards Heath is about ten miles away in the opposite direction. Glyndebourne may be reached in a little over half-an-hour. There are many attractive places to visit in West Sussex. Gatwick is about half-an-hour's drive away. |
